The World is Getting Fat(ter)

Male and female body mass indices by country, from 1980-2008.  Some interesting, but perhaps not surprising, observations: European men are consistently fatter than the women, poor people are skinny, and everyone has gotten fatter over the past 18 years. (related article)

Looks like Asians are still doing well overall – even though I am more “American” in the fat range than Asian. 😉 I will introduce a caveat though that “fatter” does not necessarily mean more nutrition. I see poor families feeding their children a can of Sprite and Cheetos as lunch. Very inexpensive and calorie rich food, but extremely bad for your health. So, next time you see a fat person, don’t necessarily attribute that to wealth nor that the person is “eating well”.

@Sun: Gary Taubes (Good Calories, Bad Calories) basically says the same thing. Obesity is basically malnutrition.
