I really don’t like area charts much. They should at least show the beginning and ending percentages for each section. I’m a little surprised food has declined so much.
I don’t think that spending on food has declined, just that spending more on other stuff has increased (In 1900 there wasn’t much else to spend on as well). So, in my eyes it’s not surprising that – in relation to other expenses – food consumption has declined…
The relative cost of food has declined significantly in the last fifty years (thanks primarily to the industrialization of agriculture), so that sharp drop-off doesn’t surprise me.
