What would be useful here is an indexed scale. I.e. How does 11.7% in 1949 compare to 3.6% in 2011. Nonetheless an index of volumes (# bananas or # square feet of housing or duration/quality of commuting activities.

Taxes, folks. How much for: income tax; social security; property taxes; sales tax; state income tax? Tax freedom day comes in April or May — meaning over 30% of US income goes to the government. Are we getting what we pay for?
