I don’t care much for this style of infographic nowadays, but this one managed to hold my attention – something about actually using interesting information and the retro style graphics, I think.

I have to call bullshit on any infographic that claims to have data from 2003 for the USSR.

Scott, you are right. There is no health problems related to the problem of the American diet and lack of exercise. Only Communists would create such a conspiracy.

Mike, thanks for the strawman. Too bad Guy Fawkes Night was last week.

Of course there are health problems with obesity. But if someone somehow didn’t know that the USSR collapsed long before 2003, I really have to question their data-gathering and/or critical thinking skills.

More to the point, are the numbers for the still-existing countries correct? The first two listed “sources” are 404s. The third, statinfo.biz, actually has the numbers in question. Who are statinfo.biz, and where did they get the data? Good luck finding out, cause I couldn’t.

So maybe I should find my own sources and compare. Well, the USDA says that in 2003 (the same year in the infographic) the per capita “food available for consumption” in the United States was 2,757 calories, about a thousand less than the infographic says, which is 3,754. That’s 36% higher than the USDA number, hardly normal statistical variation. True, a lot of people don’t like the USDA, but I think they’re a bit more reputable in matters like this than “statinfo.biz”, whoever they are.

Huh, so someone who thinks the USSR is still around messed up on some other data too. Who woulda thunk? Oh wait, I did.

Bravo. Isn’t it nice to cite sources and make substantiated claims?

As opposed to how the research for this infographic was conducted, absolutely. You seem to be pretty testy, Mike. You aren’t the infographic’s author by any chance, are you?

Now, now, boys. Play nice, or I’m going to have to put you both in time out.
