I like the idea of using spokes for different series, though it could be confusing. I have no idea why they included the same data as pie charts, unless just as an example of how much clearer bar-charts are. (via)

Can’t see how the spoked layout helps, especially as the right-hand set of bars are in the opposite order to the key! Also, whilst the birth, fertility and death data are normalised, the HIV/Aids data is not and therefore difficult to estimate the importance without knowing the population of the country. Lots of unused space and what are those pies for!

This is absolutely the wrong data for pie charts. How should five fertility rates for different countries add up to 100%?
I wish I remember where I read: Pies are the Comic Sans of the graphics world.
The spoke design is attractive and eye-catching, but not effective for communicating information. It’s impossible to compare birth rates and death rates without reading the data labels. And the objections raised by VisIT are also important defects in this presentation.
