Actual article <a href="http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/www.journalofmaps.com/article_depository/namerica/Stimers_Seven_1271971348.pdf" rel="nofollow">here</a>.

@Frank: the researchers acknowledge this was done as a mental experiment. I don't like their indexes for sloth and pride either, but these are quite difficult variables to operationalise in any case.

I believe this is really, really flawed. STD rates for instance has nothing to do with lust, it has to do with poor education in sexual health and abstinence only programs. Sloth has nothing to do with expenditures on art, but would be more realistically tied to something like amount of cars per capita. Only one or two of these can even kindly be said to display what it claims to.

In short: art project fail.

[...] ChartPorn was kind enough to synthesize the methodology. And since this is blogging, we can be lazy enough to just cut and paste, their edited cut and pasted. In fact, we didn’t even read it all the way through before posting the excerpt. (And we wonder why newspapers and their actual reporting have become a losing business model, ha!): Greed was calculated by comparing average incomes with the total number of inhabitants living beneath the poverty line. Envy was calculated using the total number of thefts – robbery, burglary, larceny and stolen cars. Wrath was calculated by comparing the total number of violent crimes – murder, assault and rape – reported to the FBI per capita. Lust was calculated by compiling the number of sexually transmitted diseases – HIV, AIDS, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea – reported per capita. Gluttony was calculated by counting the number of fast food restaurants per capita. Sloth was calculated by comparing expenditures on arts, entertainment and recreation with the rate of employment. And pride, lastly, is most important. The root of all sins, in this study, is the aggregate of all data. [...]

The only problem with these data and charts is that the numbers are normalized...they are relative to numbers across the whole country. So if you compared those numbers to another country - say, oh I don't know, Canada - pretty much every state would be in the red for everything.

[...] This is incredible and hilarious - someone at Kansas State mapped the seven deadly sins across the United States. The map of pride (the root of all evil) is the aggregate of all the data. Maps for each sin and more details here: http://chartporn.org/2009/05/05/the-seven-deadly-sins [...]
